        Kilnsea 31st July 2004

Index

Well off on another days beach fishing, we are going to try Kilnsea, on the Holderness Coast, Yorkshire. 5am pickup, with Cliff Moulds. We will head into Hull for a top up Brekky, at our favourite Bacon Banjo Café before a visit to see Mark at A&D Tackle for some bits, plus the latest catch reports from the beaches.

This session would be fished all the way down, then up and over top tide. The weather report was Warm. Overcast, a few very light showers, with the sun breaking through later in the day, Sea State lapping the beach. Setting up the rods anticipation was again high, but reality is that this time of the year we will be scratching about for fish. Today will be relaxing, sit back and enjoy the day on the beach; a fish will be a bonus.

The first hour there were a few knocks but nothing to show, then the rod bent, Bang Bang, YES YES, wehee I’m in. On the retrieve my reel stopped taking line with the rod bending even more. As fast hold on the bottom, but I could still feel the line being tugged. A walk down the beach, to the left to the right, then the rod sprang back on me, S***e, I called. But there was something on the end, again I started to reel and landed an angry Eel. Not big, but it was a catch. 10 minutes passed when Cliff shouted, I turned to see his rod taking good few knocks. He then proceeded to haul a fish ashore. A pouting, small, but his first of today. This put us on full alert.

The day was to be a waiting game but nothing more was to come our way. Again we enjoyed days relaxed beach fishing, with talk of what might have been. At the end of the session we collected our tackle and headed off to the car.

On the way home, we stopped at the Marquis of Granby, Easington, for that well earned thirst-quenching pint of Smooth.

No filleting tomorrow, but an experience and happy memories with the thought maybe, in the winter, we will head this way for Cod.
