Rhyl Saturday 7th August 2004Desford Sea Angling Societies day out at Rhyl
As usual an early morning start, 2am from Desford, the mini bus leaves for Rhyl. Today we are fishing from Alan Tinsleys boat WARRIOR, departure time is 6am.Talk on the bus is all-positive about the great anticipated catches of Pollack, Conger, Ling and any other piscatorial thing, that comes our way.
This trip an early local breakfast was out, being an early departure, so we were to stop on the motorway services. Never again, Bloody Ripoff.
Arriving at our leaving point the kit was carried, ready to load on to the boat. Soon we were off, watching the sunrise over the Wind Farm, hardly a breeze as the turbines were slowly turning.

Ooooops, snap bang wallop, something went wrong with one of the engines. Out of the cabin comes Skipper Alan, ” Aaaah, what the S***e was that!!!” up with the engine cover and with a quick diagnosis, he told us it was a ripped fan belt. As none of us were wearing tights or stockings he replaced it with a new one he had in his cabin.
Off again and within an hour we were fishing, straight away Mackerel were coming onboard, plenty of bait for the day. The engines restarted and we were off to the wrecks. Getting the Afterburners and other lures ready we were soon over the first wreck. As soon as the Skipper positioned for the first drift we were all ready.

Into Pollack straight away 3 to 4lbrs. Pouting, more Mackerel, Whiting, Red and Tub Gurnard. Every drift fish were coming onboard, then the tide was coming to its lowest ebb. A break was called as the skipper took us to another point where he anchored for us to try some bait fishing.Mackerel Fillets and Flappers with Squid and other baits being used. We were hoping for some good Ling or maybe a Conger.
On this day the Ling and Conger were not to show, but we all had a good bag of Pollack, up to 5lb 3ozs and enough Mackerel for friends and family back home.

The day went by with the sun and sea very kind to us. We thanked Neptune, back on shore with a pint and toast to thank the Gods for what we had received that day.
I’m shattered but ready for our next fishing adventure.
