             Spurn Head

A phone call on Monday, do you want to go fishing? What a daft question!

Steve Woods was having a day off work on Wednesday and wanted to go to the seaside, “ can you see what the tides are and find us a place to fish”. Well it’s onto the net asking what was going on and finally opted for Spurn Head.

A late pickup of 6.30am then saw us heading off to the coast, stopping off at Hull, for a breakfast at the Banjo Café then Bait from A&D Tackle.

Arriving at Spurn Head the tide was not expected to be fishable for a couple of hours, giving us time to dig for Lug. We came prepared with Steve’s spade and my bucket. Steve found digging hard as he was using an ordinary garden fork, where a potato-digging fork is the tool for the job. After a couple of hours with Steve digging and me collecting it was time to get our tackle ready for the fishing, as the tide was now flooding in.

With the collecting and prep now done the anticipation was great, first cast were heading seaward.

The weather was perfect with an easterly breeze; fishing on the riverside, the Spurn Road was protecting us, making it a suntrap. We settled down and would be able to fish until 5.30ish. With a couple of knocks and Steve catching an 8oz Flounder the days fishing did not turn in to fishing frenzy. Yes I managed to blank again, but I’ve fished and experienced Spurn Head, on it’s day this venue could be an anglers dream. We will return when Bass and Cod are at their peak times, but I did enjoy the day there.

On the way home we stopped off at the Marquis of Granby for that well deserved Pint. I have passed here many a time, but as the landlord serves a very good pint,  it will be on the agenda for every trip in that area, to call again.
